Short answer

A free LMS can mean five different things: a capped free tier, open-source software you host yourself, an open-core free edition that is hosted but not full-featured, a licence you only get if you qualify, or a trial that expires. They are not interchangeable.

The Five Kinds of Free

Search for a free LMS and you will get a list that mixes five completely different offers together. Knowing which one you are looking at tells you more than any feature comparison.

  • Free forever, with a cap. A real free tier that never expires, limited by users, courses or storage. TalentLMS, ProProfs and Connecteam work this way.
  • Open source. The software costs nothing and has no caps, but you provide the server and the maintenance. Moodle, Chamilo and Open edX sit here.
  • An open-core free edition. The vendor hosts it and there is no user cap, because the business model charges for advanced features rather than per person. MyPass LMS works this way, and so do a handful of others.
  • Free if you qualify. Free only for a specific type of organisation. Google Classroom is free for accredited institutions and explicitly excludes corporate training and for-profit education.
  • A free trial. Not free at all, just deferred. Thinkific, for example, offers a 30-day trial and no free plan.

The important question is not which is best. It is which one you are actually being offered. One of these expires, one depends on who you are, one moves the cost to your server bill, and two of them keep charging you nothing but limit you in different ways.

The Caps Nobody Puts in the Headline

Here is what the main free tiers actually allow, checked in October 2026. The numbers matter more than the marketing.

PlatformFree usersOther limitsExpires?
TalentLMS5 total, including admins and instructors10 courses, 100MB per file, no SSO, no API, vendor branding staysNo
ProProfs Training Maker10 active learners, admins not countedUnlimited courses and storage, no course library, no HRIS integrationsNo
Connecteam10 on the small business plan, 30 on the limited planThe 30-user plan drops to 3 courses, no quizzes and no completion trackingNo
Mitti10 seatsRecurring courses and the training matrix are paid onlyNo
Moodle, Chamilo, Open edXNo limitYou pay for hosting, maintenance and upgrades insteadNo
MyPass LMS Community Edition (ours)No limit, no per-seat chargeHosted for you, but CE credit tracking sits in the paid tiersNo
Google ClassroomNo limit for qualifying institutionsCorporate and for-profit training are not eligibleNo
ThinkificNo free plan30-day trial onlyYes

Two things stand out. First, free user counts are small, and several of them include your admins, so a team of five is really a team of three plus two administrators. Second, the limits that bite are rarely the user count. They are the missing SSO, the vendor logo you cannot remove, and the completion tracking that turns out to be a paid feature.

Three Traps Worth Knowing About

These are the ones that cost people money or time they did not plan for.

  • The seat cliff. Some plans do not charge you for the extra person, they move your whole team onto a paid plan. Mitti is explicit about it: add an eleventh person and everyone becomes a paid seat at 24 dollars a month, billed annually. Eleven people can take you from nothing to several thousand a year in one click.
  • The feature that quietly matters. Connecteam's 30-user free plan looks more generous than its 10-user one until you notice it removes completion tracking. For compliance training, completion tracking is the entire point, so the bigger plan is the smaller one.
  • The free tier that disappears. Canvas has discontinued its free hosted offering for teachers. Coassemble removed its free tier and now starts at 250 dollars a month. A free plan is a commercial decision, and it can be reversed after your content is already inside.

That last one is the argument for caring about data export before you care about features. Ask any vendor how you get your courses and records out, and make them show you rather than tell you. Our guide to choosing a free LMS goes through the rest of the questions worth asking.

Which Kind Actually Suits You

Match the shape of the offer to your situation rather than to the feature list.

  • Under ten people and staying there. A capped free tier is genuinely fine. Check whether admins count toward the cap before you commit.
  • You employ someone technical and want control. Open source is the honest choice, as long as you accept that hosting and upgrades are now your job. What an open-source LMS involves covers that properly.
  • You are an accredited school or college. Check whether you qualify for an education licence before paying for anything.
  • You are a nonprofit or association. Look for free tiers built for your size rather than consumer freemium plans, which is the ground free options for nonprofits and small teams covers.
  • You expect to grow past the cap within a year. Skip the free tier and look at what the paid plan costs now, because migrating later is worse than paying earlier.

The pattern across all of these: the cost does not disappear when the licence is free. It moves. Into your server bill, your admin time, or a price rise you did not schedule.

Where MyPass LMS Sits, and What It Does Not Do

We publish a free edition, so here it is on the same terms as everyone else above.

  • It is open core. The core platform is free and open. We earn from heavier features and hosting rather than from charging per person. How open core differs from open source explains why that distinction matters.
  • It does not expire. The Community Edition launched on 1 October 2026 as a free edition, not a trial.
  • There is no per-seat charge. Adding people does not change the bill, so there is no seat cliff to fall off.
  • You do not need anyone technical. Nothing to install and no server to maintain, unlike the open-source options above.
  • It is not the full product. Continuing education credit tracking sits in the paid tiers, so if CE credits are why you are shopping, check that before you start.

More than 40 organisations run on it. That last bullet is the honest catch, and every free tier in this article has one. The useful question is whether a given catch is the one that happens to matter to you.

The bottom line

Free means five different things in this market. A capped tier that never expires, open-source software where the cost moves to your infrastructure, an open-core edition that is hosted and uncapped but not full-featured, an education licence you have to qualify for, and a trial that is simply a delayed invoice. None of them are dishonest, but they are not comparable, and a list that ranks them together is not helping you.

Before you sign up for anything, get three answers: does this expire, do admins count toward the user cap, and what happens on the day I exceed it. Then ask how you would export your courses and records if the free tier went away, because it has happened to other people's free tiers this year.

If you want a free edition with no expiry date and no per-seat charge, ours is one of the options worth putting on that list. See what the free edition includes.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a truly free LMS?

Yes, in three forms. Capped free tiers like TalentLMS never expire but limit you to five or ten users. Open-source platforms like Moodle have no caps, but you host them. Open-core editions such as MyPass LMS are hosted and uncapped, with advanced features held back for paid tiers.

What is the difference between a free LMS and a free trial?

A free trial ends on a date and then you pay. A free tier has no end date but usually caps users, courses or features. Some vendors market a trial as free, so check for a time limit before anything else.

How many users do free LMS plans allow?

Usually five to ten. TalentLMS allows five, counting admins and instructors. ProProfs allows ten learners and does not count admins. Open-source platforms have no cap because you host them yourself.

What is the catch with a free LMS?

Normally one of three things: a user cap that moves your whole team to paid when you exceed it, a missing feature such as completion tracking or SSO, or a free tier the vendor later withdraws. Ask about data export before you commit.

  • Licence terms and documentation for Moodle, Chamilo, Open edX and Canvas LMS.
  • Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals eligibility terms, which exclude corporate training, employee education and for-profit education providers.
  • Caps and plan rules change frequently and several vendors have withdrawn free tiers, so treat every figure here as correct at the date of publication rather than permanent.
